Goal: The One World Literacy Foundation has found that two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. That is a staggering and sobering statistic! In partnership with NPS staff and other professionals, our goal is to bring every 1st and 2nd grade student at James Monroe Elementary School up to or exceeding their grade reading level. We want to inspire the children with a love of reading by giving them books to call their own!
Method: To gather gently used books for the 1st and 2nd grade classes at James Monroe Elementary—books they can take home and enjoy without needing to return to the school or library. We want to promote reading at home for the whole family!
How You Can Help: Donate new or gently used children’s books! Books are specifically needed for grades K-2. Sort through your bookshelves, ask your neighbors, look at your local library sale or nearby thrift store!
When: Beginning October 17th through the end of the school year, June 16th 2017
Pickup/Drop-off: Drop-off location is at our office, 501 W 35th Street, Norfolk VA 23508. If you are unable to drop off books, call us at (757) 233-0034 or email JMEbookdrive@gmail.com to schedule a pickup.
